Since we cannot meet in person this summer in our usual large gathering fashion we are going to be doing a Virtual Smökathon Competition through Zoom on August 22nd. What does that mean? Here are a few quick items:

  • 11AM – 5 PM – August 22! At 11 AM the crew will be getting online at their homes while lighting the fires for cooking. Around 5 pm we will be showing off our final products – drop in anytime between then to get updates. There will be an online video feed of every setup/competitor going all day long from the link below.
  • Challenges! There will be “challenges” throughout the day for everyone to compete in. We have published a list of the challenges and times below. These are intended to be short and fun. Tune in for one, or participate all day! The winners of each will get an etched pint glass as proof of their abilities!
  • Everyone is welcome to join! Both in competing and in dropping in to say hello to everyone!
    • Always wanted to fire up the smoker and compete? Here is the perfect chance to join us without the stress of “competition”. Get the smoker rolling for whatever you want – no restrictions on what cuts to cook, its up to you! Ask any of your Kinship connections to get on the list.
    • Are you like us and look forward to this day all year to see everyone? Drop in for a chat with the crew, join in some challenges or just crack one open with us remotely and listen in – its going to be a great day!

  • Charity: We are collecting donations this year for Minnesota Central Kitchen. MCK helps communities respond to COVID-19 by re-hiring laid off kitchen workers to prepare needed meals from rescued food. You can donate directly to MCK through their donation website or to save time you may send a donation through venmo to @isaacoustic and these will be bundled together at the end of the day. All gifts to MCK are currently being matched!

It is a pretty freelance version of what we have done in the past, but with everything going on we do not want to just pass on this year and hope to see everyone. Log into Zoom and drop in for a couple minutes to say “Hello” or stay for the whole day. You may even be able to talk to your favorite competitor and talk them into a socially distant bite!

  • Ongoing: Food Mogul Identification. Brad will be tie-breaking competitions and popping in with some famous foodies and chefs and passing out points to those who identify info about them correctly and quickly.
  • Noon: Cheap Beer Challenge. Adam is hosting the challenge to find and purchase the cheapest 6 pack on the market. Receipt must be shown. At least one can/bottle must be consumed by the winner to receive award. What a way to start the day!
  • One: “Minute to Win It”. Trevor will ask anyone who wished to participate to gather a cookie or a cracker and you have one minute to complete the task! Avoid chocolate covered ones in your preparations.
  • Two: Trivia. Jeff will host a short trivia game. Details forthcoming.
  • Three: Classic Game Show. Kyle is hosting an old game-show style competition based on food adjusted for at-home play! No prep needed.
  • Four: Most Unique Side. Isaac asks for everyone willing to create one unique item to cook up and be judged by the others. The side must be created, cooked and consumed by the competitors to be considered. Join us at 4 to cast your vote! (anyone can submit their side or compete in any of these challenges!)
  • Five: Competitors will unveil what they have cooked and the (socially distant) feast begins!
